DIY is green!

mend it cover illustrationMy new book 'Mend it!' is currently at the printers, but the Observer published a sneak preview today with a multi-page extract in their magazine.

There's a big splash across the front page of the paper too, and it follows immediately on from an extract from the new Mitchell and Webb book, all of which makes me very chuffed indeed.

There are extracts from no less than thirteen chapters, linked below. However, the helpful illustrations are not provided in the online versions of the articles, which means for some of the advice that you'll either have to be quick and get the actual Observer or, of course, buy the book!

How to repair a saggy-bottomed chair

How to make your kitchen appliances last

How to stop stairs from creaking

How to mend kitchen cupboard doors

How to sew on a button

How to fix your glasses

How to stretch tight shoes

How to remove limescale

How to restring a necklace

How to refresh an old chopping board

How to replace a zip

How to put up a shelf - and feel smug about it

How to take up a hem

NB: in this last extract, something's gone awry in the editing at Observer HQ. The correct stitch to use for a hem is of course 'hemming stitch' not running stitch!
